Longboat Key, Florida (Sarasota Area)

Longboat Key Club & Resort

Longboat Key Club & ResortThe Longboat Key Club is a private country club and AAA Four-Diamond resort located on a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota. The lush tropical setting provides avid golfers with the ultimate challenge: water, trees and sand. In addition, the location of the courses amid a bird sanctuary brings an abundance of waterfowl that add to the tropical flavor of the island golfing destination. Golf at the Resort at Longboat Key Club promises to delight and challenge players of every level with 45 holes of championship golf. Consistently rated among America’s finest, the 45 holes of golf are divided between two courses, Islandside and Harbourside.

Designed by Bill Mitchell and opened for play in 1960, Islandside, a 6,792 yard, par 72 “watery challenge” is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on the west. During construction of this golf course, canals were dredged bringing water hazards into play on all 18 holes. All of the greens, sand traps, and cart paths were renovated in 1994. Greens were planted with Tifdwarf grass, ensuring a smooth putting surface. More than 5,000 palm trees and pink and white blooming oleanders line the fairways and canals, making it one of Florida’s most beautiful and challenging courses.

Longboat Key Club & ResortThe Harbourside Course, which opened in 1982, was designed by Willard Byrd of Atlanta and consists of three nine-hole courses. The Red Hawk Course is 3,323 yards; the White Course is 3,426 yards; and the Blue Heron Course, 3,426 yards. Award-winning golf course architect Ron Garl completed a $2-million renovation of the Harbourside Blue Course in January of 2005. Now officially known as the Blue Heron, it is delighting members and guests. Mr. Garl rebuilt the putting surfaces to USGA specs, added new bunkers and chipping areas, and revamped the 580-yard par-5 fifth to create a beautiful peninsula green. Ron Garl also completed a re-design of the nine-hole Red Course in February 2006. Officially renamed the Red Hawk, the course re-design includes improving the putting surfaces and building green complexes to USGA specifications as well as creating new bunkers in strategic locations, additional chipping areas with increased contour and elevation around the greens.

Longboat Key Club & ResortThe championship layout of Harbourside provides a completely different golf experience from the Islandside Course. Bordered by Sarasota Bay to the east, the course plays through virgin stands of live oak, sabal palm, strangler fig, palmetto, fiddleleaf palm, Washingtonian palm and southern pine. Tree-lined fairways and swirling winds put a premium on shot-making and course strategy. The prevailing breezes from the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay keep Harbourside a refreshing challenge year round!

Both Islandside and Harbourside courses are PGA approved. Each course has its own driving range and large, fully-stocked pro shop featuring expansive selections of golf fashions and equipment from the latest Tommy Bahama fashions to Callaway clubs. Each course offers a clubhouse facility with indoor/outdoor dining and beverage service. Locker rooms are equipped with lounge areas, showers, television, and an attendant on duty for towels and shoe cleaning. Bag/club storage is complimentary and golf club rental is available.
